#2013alive: Envision Your Goals - Create a Vision Board

Next week, the last of Month 4 of our 12 Months of Wellness, we’re making our goals visual by creating vision boards. Try it with us – you might be inspired.

At the end of this third week—in month 4 of our 12 Months of Wellness—we’ve mentored up to help achieve success in our lives. It turns out that being a mentor can be just as life-affirming as having a mentor who helps us achieve change.

What we learned

From our Publisher, Ryan, we learned that mentorship is not only important, but it’s also inspirational in so many ways—from the help we receive from people we admire to the connections and relationships we achieve through offering our insights to others.

Bronwyn recognized the integral part her teacher and mentor played in making a successful transition from school to work and told us about personal mentors who guide her through important life decisions.

Vince showed us that giving your time as a mentor, especially to a young person, can also have some bankable rewards.

Bryce, a sometimes guitar enthusiast, recognized some profound life lessons courtesy of his former guitar teacher—the value of dedicating yourself to something you love.

Next week, we discover how creating vision boards can help us chart our course.

Coming up—Make it visual

What exactly is a vision board? Well, first of all, it’s visual—it’s something you create that evokes a specific meaning through pictures, artifacts, and other visual means. The purpose of a vision board is to help clarify, concentrate, and maintain focus on a specific life goal.

In other words, ask yourself, “What does my goal, if I achieved it, actually look like?” Experts suggest we ask ourselves specific questions, such as:

  • “What do I really, really want?”
  • “What am I passionate about?”
  • “If there was absolutely no way I could fail, what would I want?”

Breaking these questions down into categories (for example, wealth, health, relationships, career, contributions) helps to focus our thinking.
